When we landed in Kahului, I took the shuttle to pick up the rental car, while Jerry gathered the luggage. I thought Dean and Barb were jealous of my car selection (Chevy HHR, but they were merely pointing out a dent in the front fender, so we wouldn't be billed for it later. (Thanks, you two.)
I picked Jerry up, we stuffed the luggage in the back of the car, and we proceeded to Costco for a case of bottled water, a case of Coke, and, um, a few adult beverages. When we arrived at Sugar Beach Resort, we found that the rumors are true - the resort is undergoing a major remodel. With one of the four buildings closed for structural work, rooms are more limited as usual, so (darn) we ended up in one of the penthouse suites. Top floor, red arrow on the photo:

The organizers grilled hamburgers for us, and we had dinner with our good friends Mike Madden and Margaret Reiman, by the pool just before sunset. Nice way to start the vacation.
Today's gecko count: 0.
Today's book count: I made it halfway through Dean Koontz's Seize the Night. As usual, one of the cat toys found its way into our bags.
