Thursday, December 4th

Another glorious day.

We started with oatmeal and fruit on our lanai, watching the rowers. It's such a gorgous day - too nice to stay in the condo - so we drove up Haleakala, which must be like visiting Mars. The terrain is rugged, and we're always surprised by the variety of colors in the crater. This is one of our favorite places on earth.

I'm not sure why vacations are the only time I make time for exercise, but here's me at the summit. There's also a shot of "Science City", the collection of University of Hawaii and military observatories that monitor just about everything. If they ever open these up to the public, we'll be at the head of the line.

Fun wildlife today: We saw cattle egrets...on what else, but cattle? We also saw three nenes. The nene is the Hawaiian state bird, and is endangered. The park has protected habitat set up for them, and their population is ever-so-slowly increasing in size. We also saw a ring neck pheasant, which didn't look entirely pleased to see us.

These are from the crater:

We enjoyed a picnic lunch in one of the overlooks, then drove through Makawao and Paia on the way home, just in time for the best sunset of the trip (so far). Wish I'd taken the camera but sometimes it's good to just memorize the moment.

Dinner was spaghetti and salad, using up most of the fresh veggies we had on hand. We'll make a grocery run tomorow.

Today's book count: Finished Justice Denied.
